Terrace Commercial Vehicle Inspection Station
Last updated on May 5, 2022This project will develop a new Commercial Vehicle Inspection Station (CVIS) just east of Terrace to replace the old inspection station displaced by the Highway 16 & 37 Roundabout.
Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) promotes compliance of safety regulations within the commercial transportation sector, to increase road safety and protect public health, the environment, and transportation infrastructure. CVSE officers conduct more than 25,000 vehicle inspections each year, issuing violation tickets and removing unsafe vehicles from the provincial roadways daily.
CVSE operates Commercial Vehicle Inspection Stations (CVIS) located strategically throughout the Province. Terrace is ideally situated to monitor trade flows in northwest B,C,, including the Port of Prince Rupert and regional logging operations.
The new inspection station will incorporate Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technology allowing trucks registered with Weigh2GoBC to bypass the CVIS while being checked electronically, making it more efficient than the former station. These systems include:

One Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) site on Highway 16

Automated Vehicle Identification (AVI)

Over-height detectors

Tire Anomaly and Classification System (TACS) technologies that detect missing or underinflated tires
Project Cost
The $34.2 million project is jointly funded by Transport Canada ($15 million) and the Province ($19.2 million).
Status
A construction contract has been awarded to IDL Projects Inc.
Construction is scheduled to begin spring 2022 and is expected to be completed in late 2024.

Weigh2GoBC
Weigh2GoBC is a provincial initiative that offers truckers a network of Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) equipped facilities across the province that weigh commercial vehicles for compliance remotely, without forcing them to slow down from highway speed. The Weigh2GoBC program is free to join and allows commercial carriers to bypass inspection stations – saving time, fuel and money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
At a Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) equipped station, the vehicle is identified and checked for height, weight and safety credentials while travelling at highway speeds – without ever leaving the highway.
By reducing the number of vehicles that must report to inspection stations, inspectors have time to identify and focus on higher-risk carriers.
