Improvements to the George Massey Tunnel’s Reversible Lane Control System are needed to maintain capacity, reliability and operational safety for Highway 99.Improvements to the George Massey Tunnel’s Reversible Lane Control System is underway to maintain capacity, reliability and operational safety for Highway 99.

Highway 99 is a key connection for communities on both sides of the Fraser River and a vital trade route. The George Massey Tunnel currently uses a Reversible Lane Control System to increase vehicle capacity in one direction at certain times of day based on traffic volumes. As part of regular maintenance and rehabilitation on BC’s highways, the George Massey Tunnel Counterflow Lane Control System is being replaced this spring.

The project includes:

  • Upgrading the George Massey Tunnel reversible lane control system in both directions
  • Installing new overhead lane control signals, cameras, swing gate controls and electrical connections to the Ministry’s power infrastructure

Project Updates

  • System changeover has been completed.
  • Occasional nighttime lane closures will be required near the tunnel to complete final project activities until the end of April.
