Tillicum Active Transportation Bridge Project

Last updated on June 18, 2025

Artist rendering of Tillicum Active Transportation Bridge Project showing the structure over the Tillicum at Higwhay 1 intersection

An active transportation bridge across Tillicum Road will provide a safer and more seamless commute for people walking and rolling (for example, using a bicycle, wheelchair or mobility scooter) along the Galloping Goose Regional Trail.

Traffic impacts

During the construction period, the Galloping Goose Regional Trail will be detoured to the shoulder lane of the Trans-Canada Highway.

The detour route will be separated from vehicle traffic by concrete barriers.

An artist’s cross-section of the construction detour. Cross-section is conceptual and subject to change.

Status

The project is currently in the pre-tender phase, with design work substantially complete.

Project features

  • Total bridge length of approximately 100 metres
  • Maximum grade of 5% to accommodate people walking and rolling (for example, using bicycles, wheelchairs and mobility scooters)
  • Two 3-metre-wide lanes
  • Ramp access to sidewalks and intersections on both sides of Tillicum Road
  • Safe access between Rapid Bus stops and the Galloping Goose Regional Trail
  • Privacy walls and safety railings

Schedule

Work starts in early 2026, with completion expected in summer 2027.

Project cost

Project budget to be confirmed.

Project benefits

  • Improved active transportation safety: eliminate one of the last remaining signalled crossings along the Galloping Goose Regional Trail between the Western Communities and downtown Victoria
  • Greater connectivity and mobility: designed for people travelling on bicycles, wheelchairs and mobility scooters as well as on foot
  • Bridge appearance: designed to fit into with the surrounding community and match nearby structures, such as the active transportation overpass at McKenzie Avenue

By making it easier to get around without a car, the project will help to support the actions B.C. is taking through CleanBC to lower climate-changing emissions by 30% by 2030.
