The Dewdney Bridge across Nicomen Slough on Highway 7 (Lougheed Highway), approximately 8 km east of Mission, is being replaced with an improved crossing and upgraded intersections at both approaches.
Last Updated: January 5, 2024
Dewdney Bridge connects Highway 7 on either side of Nicomen Slough, with a connection to Highway 1 via Highway 9 and 11. The existing Dewdney Bridge was built in 1958 and is nearing the end of its serviceable life. Replacing the bridge is a more cost-effective way to achieve modern seismic and environmental standards than upgrading the existing structure.
Project Cost
A $32.6-million contract for the new bridge has been awarded to Kiewit Construction Services ULC.
Status
- Construction began in December 2023
Project Benefits
This project will:
- Protect the long-term availability of a vital connection for communities along Highway 7 in the Fraser Valley, and ensure resiliency of the highway network in the event of a Highway 1 closure
- Provide higher clearance for river navigation
- Improve the crossing’s environmental impact by removing 300 creosote piles from the waterway
- Better accommodate all bridge users, including people who walk and cycle, through the inclusion of a three-metre wide multi-use pathway
Schedule
- Work is underway, with completion planned for fall 2026
- The current bridge will remain open during construction of the new structure and approaches.
- Drivers can expect minor delays during construction. Updates will be posted to www.DriveBC.ca
Planned works – January 2024
- Complete site clearing, construction access and relocation of utilities
- Construction of a temporary work bridge between the existing and new bridges
- Dyke removal on the east side, and installation of stone columns for ground improvement
Planned works – February 2024
- Continue construction of the temporary work bridge between the existing and new bridges
- Dyke removal on the west side, and installation of stone columns for ground improvement
- Begin installation of pier piles for new bridge
