Cycle 16 Multi-use Path

This project will provide a safer active transportation connection for pedestrians, cyclists and non-motorized users along the Highway 16 corridor between Smithers and Telkwa. 

This area has been identified as a priority for safety improvements and active transportation facilities along the corridor. 

Project partners

The Cycle 16 Multi-Use Path was started as a grassroots campaign by a group of individuals who would later form the not-for-profit group, the Cycle 16 Trail Society. 

The trail was designed conceptually with fundraising, grants, and support from the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, and is being collaboratively developed by: 

Together, this partnership has allowed this multi-use trail to become a reality. 

Project benefits

The project will contribute to: 

  • Improving pedestrian and cyclist safety along Highway 16 
  • Increasing active transportation among residents, promoting healthy lifestyles 
  • Connecting existing active transportation networks in Smithers and Telkwa, and increasing recreational options for local area residents 

Project cost (current phase) 

The contract for the construction of the current phase (phase 3) of the multi-use path was awarded to West Horizon Contracting at $1.7 million. 

Project status 

  • Phase 0: Construction currently nearing completion by the Town of Smithers, with final works expected to be completed in 2025 
  • Phase 1: Completed in 2022 by the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako and the Cycle 16 Trail Society with support from the Ministry of Transportation and Transit 
  • Phase 2: Engineering and property acquisition underway 
  • Phase 3: Construction is currently underway, with completion expected in 2026 
  • Phase 4: Engineering and property acquisition underway  

We acknowledge this trail is being built in collaboration on the ancestral territory of the Wet'suwet'en First Nation.
