Summary:  Pass Lake opening ice fishery, change of hook requirement and rainbow trout daily quota with size restriction

Status: Proposed

Region: 3, Thompson

Management unit (MU): 3-29

Regulation type: Method/Gear/Bait and Quota

Species: All fin fish

Closing date: January 17, 2025

Decision statement: Pending

Current regulation:

  • No Ice Fishing
  • Rainbow trout daily quota is 1 with no fish under 50 cm
  • Artificial fly only
  • Bait ban
  • Single barbless hook

Proposed regulation:

  • Rainbow trout daily quota is 2 with no fish over 50 cm
  • Single hook

Rationale:

Opening ice fishing and increasing harvest limit because lake frequently suffers winter mortality, and we want anglers to utilize those resources as much as possible. Not allowing harvest of fish over 50 cm will increase the proportion of larger fish available to anglers in the event of overwintering success. Keeping harvest limit lower (two fish) than regional limit (five fish) to account for low stocking density and high angler effort. Pass Lake is highly productive and is capable of growing fish past the 50 cm mark after only two years in the lake at current stocking densities. Opening to ice fishing is in line with regional direction to allow more winter angling opportunity. The proposed changes lift the bait ban to support ice fishery. Moving to single hook instead of single barbless is in line with regional direction on stocked lakes.
