Summary: Cultus Lake changes to kokanee quota

Status: Proposed

Region: 2, Lower Mainland

Management unit (MU): 2-3

Regulation type: Quota

Species: Kokanee

Closing date: February 14, 2025

Decision statement: Pending

Current regulation:

  • No wild trout over 50 cm, 1 bull trout over 60 cm
  • No vessels on parts
  • Speed restriction (5 km/h) at north end, as buoyed and signed

Proposed regulation:

  • No wild trout over 50 cm, 1 bull trout over 60 cm
  • No vessels on parts
  • Speed restriction (5 km/h) at north end, as buoyed and signed
  • Release of all kokanee

Rationale:

Cultus Lake Sockeye Salmon were last assessed as endangered by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada in 2017. The proposed regulation change is to protect sockeye that have yet to out-migrate. This includes smolts that may be misidentified as kokanee.
