Summary: Byers Lake changes to quota and implementation of hook requirements and bait ban

Status: Proposed

Region: 7a, Omineca

Management unit (MU): 7-15

Regulation type: Method/Gear/Bait and Quota

Species: Eastern brook trout

Closing date: January 17, 2025

Decision statement: Pending

Current regulation: Trout/char daily quota is 2

Proposed regulation:

  • Trout/char daily quota is 1 with no fish over 40 cm
  • Bait ban
  • Single barbless hook

Rationale:

Byers Lake is managed as a trophy fishery. By reducing retention of fish greater than 40 cm, there is increased potential of fish to grow larger. This results in higher catch rates of larger fish and creates an improved fishery.
