2012: Girls in custody centralized at Burnaby Youth Custody Services

Last updated on July 30, 2021

The average number of girls in custody on any given day was approximately 16 (sixteen). This is in contrast to the more than 100 girls in custody at the former Willingdon School for Girls in the 1960s.

Burnaby Youth Custody Services becomes the central housing location for all girls in custody, with the exception of short term housing of girls in Prince George for cumulative remand periods up to seven (7) days and overnight housing at Victoria while awaiting transfer to Burnaby.

Programs and services for girls in custody were enhanced through:

  • Staff training
  • Expert consultation in the areas of programs and services for girls in residential settings
  • Facilities enhancements to the girls’ living units
  • Further development of programming specific to girls
