1996: Rise and fall of youth in custody

By 1996, the number of youth in provincial custody peaked with seven custody centres in operation. Since that year, the youth custody count dropped dramatically. In response, four youth custody camp facilities closed through 2003-2005 and the operating capacities of the three remaining centres in Burnaby, Victoria and Prince George were reduced.
