Youth custody and youth probation officer services, along with Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services, were amalgamated into a ministry responsible for a wide array of services for children and youth. In 2001, a dedicated Assistant Deputy Minister was put in charge of youth justice services in the ministry. The integration of services supported better coordination of the service system for young offenders.

The transfer of youth corrections also marked the beginning of the creation of separate philosophies, directions and programs to better support young offenders.

Former Assistant Deputy Minister, Ministry of Community and Family Development, shares his perspective on youth justice within a new ministry dedicated to children and family development
