Classification
- Classification is the process of analyzing a job’s accountabilities based on established evaluation plans to determine a classification level
- The goal of classification is to ensure internal pay equity as per the Public Service Act
- The process involves a classification specialist analyzing a job’s accountabilities in its organizational context, such as mandates of the organization and what other roles there are in the organization
- Classification takes place when you are creating a new position or an existing position has changed significantly

Exclusion
- Exclusion is the process of removing a position from a union due to their specific responsibilities, such as managerial authority, confidential planning and personnel or labour relations management
- The Union decides whether a position will be excluded
- Classification and Exclusion Services support people leaders throughout the exclusion process

The BC Public Service Agency’s (PSA) Classification and Exclusion Services team has a unique role to play in the BC Public Service, providing advice and making classification decisions with a full view of the organization. They also provide support for the exclusion process with unions.

- Unions negotiate with PSA job evaluation plans used to determine classification and make exclusion decisions
- Recruitment works with the Classification and Exclusion Services team to ensure vacant positions are properly classified for recruitment
