Notice of work

Starting mid-September, a section of Soda Creek–MacAlister Road will be temporarily closed for construction. The road is expected to re-open in early November.

  • Residents on both sides of the closure will continue to have access to Highway 97 on either end of the closed road segment
  • For your safety, please keep clear of crews and equipment
  • Updates will be shared on this webpage and DriveBC.ca

Soda Creek-MacAlister Road is located approximately 45 km north of Williams Lake.


Status

Following a comprehensive and technically driven process that began in late 2020, Soda Creek-MacAlister Road has reopened to the public in late 2024. To ensure long-term safety and stability, additional construction is planned from mid-September to early November 2025.

October 2024
Work was completed to regrade Soda Creek-MacAlister Road. 

April 2024
The Ministry announced plans to re-open Soda Creek-MacAlister Road on its original alignment. 

September 2023
A second geotechnical drilling program was carried out in the Soda Creek-MacAlister Road Project area to inform project planning.

April 2023
A geotechnical drilling program was carried out in the Soda Creek-MacAlister Road Project area. Crews used a drill rig to create a test hole in the ground to collect soil and water samples.

March 2022 
A program-wide engagement period was held to introduce the public to the projects, providing context and an overview of the background, process, and short-listed options being explored.

February 2022
Door-to-door engagement to inform residents about the project and potential options under consideration. Residents had the opportunity to provide feedback and considerations to the project team, and a two-page information sheet about the project was distributed during this engagement.

November 2021
An in-person drop-in session at Kersley Hall was held to provide updates on the Soda Creek-MacAlister Road Project.

March 2020 
A landslide occurred on Soda Creek-MacAlister Road, impacting the stability and safety for road users. 
The existing road moved 8 to 10 m vertically and 25 to 30 m horizontally, leading to its closure.

The Ministry is proceeding with a plan to re-open Soda Creek-MacAlister Road on its original alignment.

September 2023
As a part of ongoing project planning, a second geotechnical drilling program will begin in late September 2023. Crews will be using a drill rig to bore a test hole into the ground in the Soda Creek-MacAlister Road Project area to collect soil and water samples. This work is expected to conclude in the fall.

April 2023
As part of technical information-gathering for the Soda Creek-MacAlister Road Project, geotechnical investigative works are set to begin April 2023.
