Highway 1 Reinstatement Program, Fraser – Thompson Corridor is underway and may create travel delays throughout the corridor.

Last Updated: January 23, 2024

Location

Conditions

  • While Highway 1 remains open, travellers should expect significant delays and changes to traffic patterns, including reduced speed zones and single lane alternating traffic

Vehicle Restrictions

  • Oversize and overweight permit restrictions are in place for travel on Highway 1 between Hope and Spences Bridge.
  • Highway 1 between Boston Bar and Lytton loads are limited to:
  • Loads outside these dimensions are required to contact the provincial permit centre and use an alternate route to access Lytton and surrounding areas (i.e., Highway 5 Coquihalla to Merritt, then 97C to Highway 1 at Ashcroft, or Highway 5 Coquihalla to Kamloops, then 97 to Highway 1 at Cache Creek).

Anticipated construction delays

Expect travel delays as we continue to repair the damage to Highway 1.

Plan travel in advance and be mindful of construction activities. Please continue to check DriveBC.ca and this website for more detailed and up-to-date information.

We would like to thank the public in advance for their patience as we work to improve the safety, reliability and capacity of the highway.

Overall travel advice

Highway 8 Closure Protocol

Should Highway 1 or Highway 5 close in the future, Highway 8 will not be used as a detour as it is an active construction zone. Protocol to redirect traffic away from Highway 8 will prevent secondary closures and impacts on local residents.

Messaging on available detour routes will be made available via message signs, DriveBC.ca and social media.

Check TranBC's Current Road Advisories for detailed information about highway travel disruptions during emergency situations.

Projects

Check DriveBC for current highway conditions and follow @DriveBC on Twitter.

Obey the Cone Zone

There will be enhanced enforcement around cone zones for the duration of the construction. Plan for delays. Slow down. Keep your cool.
