Serving a custody sentence

Last updated on November 21, 2024

If you are required to serve your sentence in custody, you will be placed in a provincial or federal correctional centre. Where you serve your sentence depends on its length.

For a sentence of less than two years, you will be held in a provincial correctional centre. For a sentence of two years or more, you will be held in a federal correctional centre.

Corrections help and support

While in custody, you will meet regularly with corrections staff, who will help you make your time in custody as productive as possible. Before you are released from custody, they will work with you to prepare for your return to the community. This is called pre-release planning.
