The Highway 1 four-laning project includes approximately 1.9 km of Highway 1 four-laning, replacement of the existing R.W. Bruhn Bridge with a new four-lane bridge, and intersection improvements between Old Sicamous Road and Silver Sands Road.

March 29 to April 18, 2026

Please see the three week look ahead below for the planned construction and traffic schedule. All work is subject to change due to weather.

Pedestrian access to Sicamous Beach Park using the walkway under the bridge is closed 24/7 until further notice; please access from Silver Sands Road. The existing R.W. Bruhn Bridge sidewalk is closed and pedestrians will need to use a shuttle to cross the bridge. Further details can be found here

The project has reached an important milestone with girder installation currently underway:

  • Installations will take place seven days per week with no change to the Highway 1 closure schedule
  • Residents and businesses may intermittently experience elevated noise levels
  • Intermittent daytime closures of the Sicamous Narrows are scheduled to begin mid-April, further details will be shared in the coming weeks

Reduced speed limits on Highway 1 near the R.W. Bruhn Bridge are in effect 24/7.

Project overview

Project improvements include:

Schedule

  • Construction started: Fall 2024
  • Scheduled completion: late 2027
  • Girders will be installed in spring 2026
  • Rock drilling and blasting above Old Sicamous Road and Old Spallumcheen Road is ongoing
  • Hauling of material to disposal sites is ongoing; expect to see a continued presence of haul trucks in the area

Project benefits

  • Improve safety and traffic flow along the Trans-Canada Highway 1 corridor
  • Improve safety of local road connections at the Trans-Canada Highway 1
  • Enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists along the existing Trans-Canada Highway 1 corridor

Project cost

The total project cost is estimated at $260.5 million. This includes up to $91.08 million from the Government of Canada under the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component of the New Building Canada Fund.
