Correctional centres overview

Last updated on November 21, 2024

Provincial correctional centres provide safe and secure custody to incarcerated individuals.

While the levels of security vary from centre to centre, each offers a variety of programs, including educational and vocational training opportunities, that improve the likelihood of success upon release from custody and are proven to address factors that contribute to criminal behaviour.

Provincial centres are for:

  • Individuals awaiting trial
  • Individuals serving a provincial sentence of less than 2 years

Provincial correctional centres are operated by the Adult Custody Division of BC Corrections.

See the Correctional Service of Canada website for information about federal correctional centres.

For information about the types of in custody sentences an offender might receive please see Serving a Custody Sentence (Adult Offenders).
