Youth justice programs and services are the responsibility of the Ministry of Children and Family Development. They provide custody and community supervision under the federal Youth Criminal Justice Act and the provincial Youth Justice Act.

Youth custody centres house youth offenders ordered by the court to remain in open or secure custody or youth detained in custody while waiting to appear in court. Youth may be held in custody centres for all types of offences, ranging from repeated property offences such as theft to serious or violent offences.
