Mackenzie Sustainable Resource Management Plan

Last updated on May 1, 2018

The Mackenzie Sustainable Resource Management Plan (SRMP) is a consolidated and coordinated approach to a planning at the landscape level for specific values on Crown land in the Mackenzie area.

Sustainable resource management plans  are a tool for the B.C government to implement strategic land use plans, identify economic opportunities and conserve environmental values.

The goal of sustainable resource management plans is to provide objectives that are site-specific, results-based and operationally relevant. The scale of sustainable resource management plans occurs at various scales from 1:10,000 to 1:100,000.

The Mackenzie SRMP area includes:

  • Delineation of specific areas for agriculture land development
  • Objectives for the management of old forest and biodiversity in the Mackenzie Natural Resource District
  • Delineation of the Mugha Marsh as a sensitive area

Old Growth Forest Management

Conserving old growth forest is an important component of the Mackenzie LRMP and a critical element in the management of biodiversity at the landscape scale. The Mackenzie LRMP provides direction to ensure the protection of old-growth forests into the future. Old growth forests are management in two distinct ways in Mackenzie:

  • Legal establishment of spatial Old Growth Management Areas (OGMAs) in the southern portion of Mackenzie Natural Resource District
  • Legal establishment of non-spatial landscape biodiversity objectives

Mugaha Marsh Sensitive Area

The Mackenzie LRMP identified the Mugaha Marsh as an area of significant importance to wildlife and wildlife viewing. To ensure the habitat provided by the wetland and surrounding area was adequately protected, the Mugaha Marsh was established as a sensitive area under the Forest Practises Code Act in 2001.

Visual Management

The Mackenzie LRMP provides guidance on the management of the visual landscape to ensure scenic quality is maintained through the designation of scenic areas and visual quality objectives.  The Mackenzie SRMP assesses the landscape visual sensitivity and determines the appropriate level of visual alterations.

Agriculture Land Development

The Mackenzie LRMP identifies agriculture and grazing as important socio-economic values with objectives to ensure agriculture capabilities are maintained in the long term. The Mackenzie LRMP provides general management direction to map and designate areas for the specific use of agriculture expansion to minimize the conflict between agriculture and grazing with other resources uses.

The Mackenzie SRMP – Agriculture Development Areas (ADAs) was a planning process to legally designate specific parcels of crown land for agriculture development and settlements reserves area.
