Contract firefighting crew

In years with significant fire activity, the BC Wildfire Service calls for additional support from contract firefighters. Thousands of contract firefighters help manage B.C.’s wildfires.

Contract firefighters are divided into two categories, based on level of training: Type 2 and 3 (Type 1 are employed directly by BC Wildfire Service). The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre defines training standards and all training is measured against international standards with an emphasis on crew safety.

Although Type 2 and 3 firefighters require less training than Type 1 firefighters employed by BC Wildfire Service, they are professional resources with valuable skills and knowledge.

  • Type 2 contract crews conduct low-risk direct attack, establish hose and pump lines, dig fire guards and remove fuels
  • Type 3 contract crews conduct mop-up (extinguishing a fire after it has been brought under control), patrol and move equipment

Frequently asked questions

What role do contractors play in the wildfire season?

The BC Wildfire Service calls on the skills and expertise of many contractors each year and selects qualified and appropriate resources for its fire operations.

If its own personnel are stretched to capacity, the BC Wildfire Service can call upon other resources from local contract crews and “fire suppression specialists”, or from its national and international partners.
