Last updated on October 12, 2023As new technologies and fuels emerge in the BC market, the Ministry is developing protocols to provide greater clarity as to how they can be recognized under the Low Carbon Fuel Standard. The Ministry is also developing more guidance and/or enhanced standards for technologies and fuels already well established in the market. Draft protocols will be posted here for feedback and finalized protocols will be posted on the Information Bulletins webpage.
Co-processing Methodology Protocol
In the last few years, the Ministry has been receiving more requests for approval of carbon intensities for co-processed diesel and gasoline. Co-processing is when low-carbon and/or renewable feedstocks are used in combination with petroleum feedstocks during the refining process to produce blended fossil and low carbon fuel products. Due to the nature of co-processing, it is challenging to determine the volume and carbon intensity of the renewable/low carbon portion of co-processed fuel.
To address the challenges associated with determining the volume and carbon intensity of co-processed fuel, the Ministry is developing a methodology for co-processed fuels. The purpose of this paper is to outline the various elements of the proposed methodology as a starting point for policy related to co-processed fuels.
The Ministry is accepting feedback on the proposed co-processing methodology. Responses must be in writing and must be submitted by email or mail before 7 a.m. on November 6, 2023, to one of the following addresses:
