About the BC Electrical Code

The Electrical Safety Regulation adopts the Canadian Electrical Code as the BC Electrical Code, with some changes specific to B.C.

The changes are limited to updating the definitions of 'contractor,' 'National Building Code' and 'National Fire Code' to reflect the British Columbia definitions: 

  • Licensed electrical contractor
  • BC Building Code
  • BC Fire Code

Code requirements

The code sets minimum requirements for: 

  • Safe wiring methods
  • Grounding and bonding
  • Overcurrent protection
  • Installation standards 
  • Hazardous locations 
  • Renewable energy systems  

Code enforcement

The BC Electrical code is enforced by Technical Safety BC under the Electrical Safety Regulation.  

BC Electrical Code 2024 Edition

The current edition of the BC Electrical Code came into effect March 4, 2025. It applies to all projects with work permits applied for after that date.
