Publication of monetary orders and exemption request

Last updated on July 31, 2025

The Residential Tenancy Branch (RTB) will begin publishing all monetary orders issued on or after July 31, 2025, in a public and searchable database. The RTB will wait for at least 15 days to publish a monetary order after a decision is made.

The published information will include:

  • Landlord and tenant names
  • The dispute file number
  • The rental address
  • How much money is owed and who owes it

If you feel that publication of these details will harm your safety, you may submit a request for exemption. The RTB will review requests to determine if concerns for a person’s safety outweigh the public interest in transparency and accountability.

Who qualifies for an exemption

The RTB may grant an exemption to individuals who:

  • Demonstrate that publication of their name or rental address leads to a credible threat to their safety, and
  • Meet one or more of the following conditions:
    • Have experienced or are experiencing family or intimate partner violence
    • Are justice sector workers (e.g., law enforcement, prosecutors, judges)
    • Are under protective orders or have active safety plans in place
    • Face threats to personal safety from a third party

How to request an exemption

Step 1: Complete an exemption request

Use form RTB-59 Application to Exempt Monetary Order from Publication (PDF, 260KB) to explain how the publication of information is harmful to your safety.

Step 2: Submit the exemption request

To avoid delays in the processing of your request, submit the completed form RTB-59 as soon as possible to HSRTO@gov.bc.ca, include the subject line: “Exemption Request”. If you require assistance, contact the RTB or visit a Service BC office in person.

Unless an exemption request is received, monetary orders will be published 15 days after the final dispute resolution decision is issued.

Step 3: Supporting documentation

After the RTB reviews your exemption request, we may contact you to request supporting documentation. Documentation examples may include:

  • A letter from a victim services worker, social worker, legal advocate, or law enforcement agency
  • A copy of a restraining or protection order
  • A sworn affidavit detailing the safety concerns

Please note under s.87.3(1)(c) of the Residential Tenancy Act and s.80.3(1)(c) of the Manufactured Home Park Tenancy Act, an administrative penalty can be levied for anyone providing false or misleading information.

An application for exemption applies only to the current monetary order. If you are named in another monetary order in future, you will need to submit a new exemption request.
