Provincial Registries

You must be providing health services or facilitating care related to the patient prior to searching for the patient, or have one of the following business needs:

  • identify an individual who needs or is receiving health services;
  • identify a person providing health services; or
  • facilitate health insurance and health service billing.

Use or Disclosure of Patient Data

Patient data received from a ministry HIE system is to be kept confidential and not used or disclosed for any purpose other than to provide care to the individual or to provide them with a copy of their own record. All clinical data must be stored as received; you cannot modify it, but you may make annotations.

Storing Data

Patient data you receive from an HIE system may be stored in the patient’s chart, but nowhere else. Data that is not stored in the patient chart must be treated as transient and used for display and print purposes only.
