Update: Early Literacy Screening Tools Resource
The Early Literacy Screening Tools Resource is now available. This resource includes information for school districts on evidence-based early literacy screening tools that are commercially available and the criteria that locally developed screening tools must meet.
School districts are expected to begin implementing screening at kindergarten (as a minimum) this fall, using one of the approved early literacy screening tools or a locally developed screening tool that meets the ministry’s screening criteria.
The Province is investing $30 million over three years to better support students’ literacy development in the K-12 school system. This initiative is intended to increase literacy levels for all students and allow for targeted interventions for K-12 students, including for students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia. Early identification and intervention is key to helping students struggling with literacy in their early school years, and throughout their education.
