Update: Early Literacy Screening Tools Resource and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
The Early Literacy Screening Tools Resource (updated) and supporting Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) are now available. These resources provide guidance to schools and districts on early literacy screening, evidence-based early literacy screening tools, as well as considerations for how districts can plan to use their professional learning grants to best support mandatory screening, professional learning and capacity building.
School districts are expected to begin implementing screening at kindergarten (as a minimum) this fall, using one of the approved early literacy screening tools, another commercially available screening tool, or a locally developed screening tool that meets the ministry’s criteria.
The Province is investing $30 million over three years to better support students’ literacy development in the K-12 school system. This initiative is intended to increase literacy levels for all students and allow for targeted interventions for K-12 students, including for students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia. Early identification and intervention is key to helping students struggling with literacy in their early school years, and throughout their education.
