Highway 1 - Ford Road to Tappen Valley Road

The Trans Canada Highway 1 Ford Road to Tappen Valley Road Four-Laning project will upgrade approximately 4.3 km of the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) and replace the Tappen Overhead bridge. The western limit of the project begins at Ford Road and extends through to its terminus 400 metres east of Tappen Valley Road.

Traffic impacts

  • Tappen Creek Detour and White Creek Detour in effect at 60 km/hr

  • No work scheduled December 20, 2024 to January 6, 2025

Daily stoppages

  • Daily intermittent minor stoppages for construction equipment and trucks from Kault Hill to Ford Road
  • Localized reduced speed zones between Kault Hill and Ford Road to 60 km/hr during active construction and 80 km/hr during inactive times

Mondays to Saturdays

  • From 7:00 pm until 6:00 am - up to 30 min stoppages through the site
  • From 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm - up to one 20 min stoppage around 1:00 pm and one 30 min stoppage around 7:00 pm

Closures

  • Kault Hill eastbound rest area/brake check is closed to public/trucks
  • Tappen Valley Road closed from Highway 1 to 399 Tappen Valley Road until December 2025
    • Detour available via Bolton Road
  • South exit of James Road onto Sunnybrae-Canoe Point Road.
    • Access and Exit from James Road to be via north intersection at the Trans Canada Highway 1

Project overview

Project improvements include:

  • 4.3 km section of the Trans-Canada Highway widened from two to four lanes
  • New east bound commercial carrier pullout
  • New frontage road system to provide safer access to the highway
  • Modified protected T-intersection at Tappen Valley Road
  • Replacement of the existing Tappen Overhead bridge
  • Installation of median barrier

Status

  • On site Contractor: Emil Anderson Construction (EAC)
  • Drilling and blasting at Kault Hill
  • Future frontage roads under construction along Kirkpatrick Road, James Road, Sunnybrae Road and Arnouse Road
  • Traffic flip to new Tappen Overhead Eastbound Bridge (Nov 2024)
  • Remove existing Tappen Overhead Bridge (Staring Nov 2024)
  • Westbound Tappen Creek Bridge (Starting January, 2025)
  • Blasting and Rock Stabilization at Kault Hill (Estimated completion March, 2025)
  • Skwlax Resource Management Ltd. completed advanced clearing and fencing

Schedule

  • Construction began: October 4, 2023
  • The project is scheduled to be completed by: October 31, 2026

Project benefits

  • Improve safety, capacity and movement of goods and services
  • Provide safer access to local roads for residents, commercial vehicles, tourists and travellers
  • Reduce travel times during peak travel periods
  • Wider shoulders and new frontage road system to support cyclists, pedestrians, and people using other modes of active transportation

Project cost

The total project cost is estimated at $243 million. This includes up to $82.1 million from the Government of Canada under the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component of the New Building Canada Fund.
