Strategic operations

Last updated on July 24, 2026

Correctional services depend on more than day-to-day supervision. Staff need clear policies, useful tools, strong programs and reliable information to support the people they work with.

Strategic Operations helps BC Corrections improve how services are planned, delivered and evaluated. The team supports work in correctional centres, probation offices and communities across B.C.

How the team supports front-line work

Strategic Operations helps staff do their work safely, consistently and effectively.

The team works on:

  • Policies that guide correctional work
  • Programs that support people in custody and in the community
  • Research that helps BC Corrections understand what is working
  • Technology that helps staff manage information and supervision
  • Planning for future service needs
  • Work to address Indigenous overrepresentation in the correctional system

This work helps staff make informed decisions and provide more consistent services across B.C.

Working with Indigenous communities

Strategic Operations supports BC Corrections’ work with Indigenous communities and partners.

Staff in the Indigenous Programs and Relationships Section help BC Corrections:

  • Build and strengthen relationships with Indigenous communities
  • Support culture-based programs
  • Understand the role of culture in healing and behavioural change
  • Provide cultural safety training for staff

This work supports services that are culturally safe, trauma-informed and grounded in research and practice.

Tools and technology for staff

Staff need reliable tools to manage information, support supervision and do their work safely.

Strategic Operations supports tools such as:

  • Electronic supervision technology
  • Client management software
  • Information management systems

These tools help staff access information and manage supervision in correctional centres, probation offices and communities.

Learning what works

The Performance, Research and Evaluation unit helps BC Corrections understand what is working and what can be improved.

The unit considers:

  • Program results
  • Service trends
  • Research evidence
  • Data from correctional operations
  • Promising practices from other places

This information helps BC Corrections improve programs and services over time.
