Community supervision and support

Probation officers:

  • Supervise people and enforce court orders
  • Connect people with programs and community supports
  • Help people make positive changes
  • Work with people to reduce the likelihood of reoffending

How probation officers support change

Probation officers use research-based case management strategies and interventions to reduce reoffending.

They use:

  • Communication and problem-solving skills
  • Positive role modelling
  • Risk assessment techniques
  • Programs and other interventions

These approaches help people learn different ways of responding to situations and challenges.

Supervision based on individual needs

Probation officers:

  • Balance enforcing court orders with helping people make positive changes
  • Provide supervision, support and programming based on a person’s assessed risk of reoffending
  • Identify needs that may contribute to reoffending
  • Adapt support and programming to a person’s needs and learning style
