Legislation, policies and guidelines

The Resort Timber Administration Act provides the Mountain Resort Branch (MRB) specific powers and responsibilities under the Forest Act and the Forest and Range Practices Act.

The act allows MRB Statutory Decision Makers to issue licences to cut, authorizing timber harvesting within a Controlled Recreation Area, for purposes related to all-season resort development. It provides a one-stop service approach to the resort industry consistent with the B.C. Resort Strategy and Action Plan.

The following acts and regulations are provided here for reference only. Please note that online versions of acts may not be up-to-date.

In October 2023, the Short-Term Rentals Accommodation Act (STRAA) was passed. One component of the STRAA is a principal residence requirement that takes effect on May 1, 2024 and limits short-term rentals to the host’s principal residence plus one secondary suite or accessory dwelling unit. Communities with mountain resorts include land that is exempted from the principal residence requirement.
