The Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation (EMLI) commissioned a report in 2016 that helped set the economic development context within the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sector in B.C, to help guide government policy and actions to support economic development.

The report identifies B.C.’s competitive advantages related to economic opportunities in the ZEV sector, including:

  • An internationally recognized advanced automotive sector;
  • Highly qualified personnel and strong depth in local talent;
  • Progressive environmental policy;
  • A high adoption rate of ZEVs;
  • A clean and abundant source of electricity; and
  • B.C. is geographically well positioned to West Coast states and Asian markets.

The ZEV sector includes companies across all aspects of the ZEV supply chain – from raw materials to final consumer products – related to vehicles and vehicle components, batteries and fuel cells, charging stations, and other technologies.

More recent data from EMLI's 2023 Zero-Emission Vehicle Update indicates the following economic contributions specific to the ZEV sector:

  • Approximately 384 companies and organizations involved in all aspects of the supply chain;
  • Over 8,280 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs in total direct employment associated with ZEV-related activities;
