Children born in B.C. to refugee claimants

Last updated on May 16, 2024

Generally, refugee claimants are provided health benefits under the IFHP until they are eligible for provincial or territorial healthcare coverage. Refugee claimants who also have a work or study permit valid for six months of longer may be eligible for MSP enrolment.

Effective February 20, 2024, babies born in B.C. to refugee claimant parents with IFHP coverage may be provided with date of birth MSP coverage.

To prove membership in the IFHP, refugee claimants must submit one of the following with their child’s B.C. Application for Health and Drug Coverage:

  • Acknowledgement of Claim and Notice to Return for Interview letter (AOC)
  • Refugee Protection Claimant Document (RPCD) (with photo)
  • Temporary Document for Lost/Stolen Refugee Protection Claimant Document (RPCD)
  • Interim Federal Health Program Certificate (IFHC) (with or without a photo)
