The Community Care and Assisted Living Act and the Assisted Living Regulation set out operators’ responsibilities to promote and protect residents’ health and safety in assisted living residences.

Operators are responsible for maintaining the residence, equipment and furnishings. They must:

  • Ensure the number of units in a residence  or the number of residents you are housing match what was approved in their registration
  • Ensure that each unit has or is a bedroom, with a door and a window
  • Make sure the building is kept in good repair, clean and safe
  • Furnish the residence with furniture and equipment that are clean, safe, in good condition and meet residents’ needs and capabilities
  • Ensure the residence conforms to all building and housing legislation, such as building and fire safety codes
