The nominees for the 2023 Award of Excellence for Workplace Health and Safety are:
In the realm of worker safety, AIM Roads Incorporated sets a shining example with its innovative Safety Intelligent Protection Technology (SIPT) system – a comprehensive solution designed to protect its road maintenance crews.
This unique safety solution combines cutting-edge hardware and software components, creating a virtual fence and hazard alarm system, which is used in addition to traffic control devices to enhance worker safety. But what truly sets SIPT apart is its integration of AI-driven hazard detection, a unique and vital addition to its operations.
SIPT has significantly reduced workplace risks, including accidents related to vehicles entering the work zone. Workers now react more swiftly to potential hazards thanks to SIPT's real-time alerts. AIM Roads has witnessed a decrease in incident reports and worker injuries since SIPT's deployment. Moreover, the general traffic on their roads appreciates the added safety provided by the Safety Camera.
AIM Roads recognizes that SIPT's relevance extends beyond their organization. They aim to inspire the broader adoption of advanced safety technologies across the road construction sector. This widespread implementation of SIPT-like systems could potentially significantly reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities throughout the industry.
The AIM Roads SIPT system is a true game-changer, enhancing worker safety during road maintenance as it’s used in addition to compliant traffic control devices. Its effectiveness is measurable, its significance is far-reaching, and its relevance extends to improving safety standards across the road construction industry.
Lafarge Canada Incorporated addressed a substantial problem in the Lower Mainland area, where haulers unknowingly drove with raised tarps or boxes, leading to multiple reports of overpass and overhead wire strikes. Lafarge devised an in-house solution to counter this issue—a truck box/tarp height notification system for their dump trucks.
Implemented by their skilled shop crew, the system incorporates a flashing light notification device installed as a dash light, alerting the driver when their truck box or tarp is elevated. Additionally, a flashing light on the transfer trailer, visible in the driver’s left side mirror, warns the driver when their trailer box and tarp are extended.
Lafarge asserts that this initiative significantly mitigates the risk of haulers inadvertently contacting overhead wires on-site or overpasses on roadways while driving with raised tarps or boxes on either their truck or transfer trailer.
Looking ahead, Lafarge envisions that widespread adoption of this initiative across the industry will not only decrease incidents and enhance staff workplace safety but also prevent traffic disruptions and save substantial costs associated with damage mitigation.
