Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm Recycling

Last updated on August 9, 2018

What can I recycle?

  • Smoke alarms
  • Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms
  • Combination smoke & CO alarms

The program does not accept devices that perform only the detection function and not the alarm function, e.g. a smoke and/or CO detector unit connected to a building-wide monitoring or alarm system. These types of units defined by the CAN/ULC-s529 standard, are typically installed in commercial buildings and are outside the scope of this program.

Why should I recycle?

By recycling your used smoke or CO alarm, you divert waste from your local landfills and help the environment. You also reduce the need for raw materials to manufacture new products.

AlarmRecycle is a recycling program for used or expired smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms.

Where can I recycle?

AlarmRecycle has a network of recycling drop-off locations across BC. To find the location nearest you, visit AlarmRecycle or call 604-732-9253 (Lower Mainland), 1-800-667-4321 (outside the Lower Mainland).

What happens to it?

Collected smoke or CO alarm are transported to a recycler for processing and then broken down into different parts. The resulting materials are then recycled as much as possible. Any materials requiring special handling are managed according to all applicable provincial and federal regulations.

How are we doing?

The smoke and carbon monoxide alarms program was launched in 2011.

The program collected 1430 alarms between October and December, 2011
