The Province has been engaging with First Nations to explore the formation of committees or discussion tables focused on wildlife and habitat stewardship within the Thompson-Okanagan Region.
The Okanagan, Osoyoos, Penticton, Upper Nicola, Upper Similkameen and Lower Similkameen Indian Bands, and the Westbank First Nation are establishing a Syilx Wildlife and Habitat Committee with the Province. These groups support B.C. government’s work to initiate an interest holder roundtable within the Okanagan-Boundary at the same time.
Within the Thompson and Lillooet area (see map below), the B.C. government is collaborating with other interested groups and individuals to create a similar wildlife and habitat roundtable to advance the intent of Action 2 of the Together for Wildlife strategy.
The aim of these roundtables is to provide advice to the provincial government on regional implementation of the wildlife and habitat stewardship components of the Together for Wildlife strategy. By emphasizing communication, transparency and information sharing, these advisory teams will foster respectful and trust-based collaboration between their Indigenous and non-Indigenous members.
The call for applications is now closed. Application review is in progress. Membership will be posted to this website in January 2024.
The Province, with Indigenous partner support, will establish wildlife and habitat roundtables through a robust, transparent, and inclusive membership selection process. The member selection process is a pilot project designed by the Province in the Thompson-Okanagan Region and may not reflect future processes used to establish regional wildlife advisory committees in other regions of the province.
We are inviting interested and qualified residents of the area shown on the map below to submit their applications to be considered for advisory roundtable membership. This is a first step in the development of an advisory table. The group will work towards formalizing the meetings and exploring different ways the roundtable could proceed.
