Economic impact assessments

Last updated on August 20, 2026

Economic impact assessments help explain how spending, investment, economic activity or an economic event affect British Columbia's economy. Using the BC Stats Input-Output Model, these assessments estimate how economic activity affects industries and regions across British Columbia, and the resulting impacts on jobs, income, gross domestic product (GDP), and government revenues. The model is also used to develop tools and data products that help users understand the economic impact of projects, industries, policies and major events across the province.

About the BC Stats Input-Output Model

The BC Stats Input-Output Model is a detailed representation of B.C.'s economy. It is built using Statistics Canada's Supply and Use and Input-Output Tables. The model captures the economic relationships between industries, households, governments and trade, helping to show how economic activity in one part of the economy can affect others. BC Stats then extends this model using economic methodology to apply to the economic development regions and regional districts of the province.

The BC Stats Input-Output model estimates the economic impacts of projects, policies, investments, industries and major events across the province. The model supports analysis of direct, indirect and induced impacts, including effects on output, employment, labour income, gross domestic product (GDP), government revenues and other economic indicators.

The current version of the model is anchored to the latest available data from Statistics Canada and is enhanced with more current and detailed regional data by BC Stats to support provincial and regional economic analysis. The model is the foundation for BC Stats' economic impact assessments, Regional Industry Multipliers and other economic analysis products.

BC Stats Regional Industry Multipliers

Based on the BC Stats Input-Output Model, the BC Stats Regional Industry Multipliers provide a consistent and transparent way to estimate economic impacts of production (output) and investment in B.C. and show how spending moves through the economy via direct, indirect and induced effects.
