Criteria
Waste generated in the performance of the work outlined in this RFx should be kept to a minimum (e.g., reusing materials where feasible), and dealt with in an environmentally preferable manner including, but not limited to, maximum diversion from landfill, composting, and recycling at a certified facility.
Proponents should identify how waste is managed in relation to pollution prevention:
- Use of refillable or bulk options when available to prevent packaging waste, such as refillable cleaning supplies or refillable beverages
- Collection and disposal of multiple waste streams with three stream minimum of compostables, recyclables, and garbage
- Haulers that provide waste collection services provide metrics, including but not limited to waste volumes, disposal pathways, or GHG emissions
- Reusable, where possible, and recyclable or compostable at end of life
- Waste management practices are clearly communicated in ways such as, but not limited to, signage and education regarding material sorting requirements or the benefits of reuse
- Waste data is collected and used to determine how to improve waste management, including but not limited to completed waste audits and updated actions to respond to results
- Recycled content is used when possible, reducing the need for new materials and supporting markets for recycled materials, including recycled plastic content products
- Canada Plastic Pact Golden Design Rules for packaging are used or supported when evaluating plastic packaging options
Sample RFx questions
- Describe the strategies used to reduce waste, environmental impacts, and emissions related to proponents’ operations.
- Describe the methodologies used to reduce, reuse, or recycle materials as part of the production phase and downstream.
