Possession and purchasing limits

There are strict laws and regulations around the use, purchase, and possession of non-medical cannabis in B.C. Make sure you know the rules before you buy or use cannabis.

Age limit

In B.C., you must be 19 years or older to:

  • Use or consume cannabis
  • Enter a cannabis store
  • Buy cannabis
  • Possess cannabis
  • Grow cannabis

Possession and purchasing limits

In B.C., adults can:

  • Possess up to 30 grams of dried non-medical cannabis, or its equivalent, in a public place
  • Purchase up to 30 grams of dried non-medical cannabis, or its equivalent, in a single transaction
  • Possess up to 1,000 grams of dried non-medical cannabis, or its equivalent, at home. This limit is per household
  • Grow up to four cannabis plants at home. Learn more about the rules for growing at home

Edible cannabis limits

In Canada, legal cannabis edibles cannot contain more than 10mg of THC per package.

Individual packages of 10mg cannabis edibles may be placed and sold together in a single container. For example:

  • A multi-pack of cannabis edibles can contain 10 sealed packages of edibles if each individual package contains no more than 10mg of THC
  • A multi-pack of cannabis edibles cannot contain 5 sealed packages of edibles if each individual package contains 20mg of THC

Possession in vehicles

The following amounts of cannabis may be transported in a vehicle:

  • Up to 30 grams of dried non-medical cannabis, or its equivalent, in its original unopened packaging
  • Up to 30 grams of dried non-medical cannabis or its equivalent, without packaging or in open packaging, that is inaccessible to the driver (for example, in the trunk)
  • Up to 4 cannabis plants that are not budding or flowering
