Abbotsford – Long-term care home replacement

A new 200-bed long-term care home to replace the 109-bed Cottage Worthington Pavilion. The design will follow best practices for infection control and cultural sensitivity.

  • Current status: Procurement and design

Burnaby Hospital redevelopment

This is a multi-phase project that will transform the hospital into a modernized medical and surgical health care campus. It will have 2 new patient care towers, a new cancer centre, expansion and renovations to existing buildings on campus.

Phase 1

Phase 1 includes an 83-bed pavilion with maternity, neonatal intensive care, mental health inpatient and medicine units. Renovations and expansions include a new surgery centre and an expanded emergency department.

Phase 2

Phase 2 includes a 160-bed inpatient tower and state-of-the art cancer centre with space for 2 PET/CT scanners, oncology pharmacy, clinical trials and research.

Coquitlam – Red Fish Health Centre for Mental Health and Addiction (θəqiʔ ɫəwʔənəq leləm') 

A new 105-bed therapeutic facility for people with complex mental health challenges and substance use issues.

  • Health authority: Provincial Health Services Authority (BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services - BCMHSU)
  • Current status: Completed. Open since October 2021.
  • Total cost: $131 million

Delta – New long-term care home

A new 200-bed long-term care home to replace the 92-bed Mountain View Manor. The design will use new best practices for infection control and cultural sensitivity.

  • Completion: 2027
  • Anticipated total cost: $180 million

New Westminster – Royal Columbian Hospital redevelopment and renewal

The Royal Columbian Hospital redevelopment project is a multi-phase project that will increase the hospital’s capacity, introduce advanced medical technologies and improve the health care environment for patients, staff and medical staff.

Phase 1

A new 75-bed Mental Health and Substance Use Wellness Centre.

  • Current status: Completed. Open since March 2020.
  • Total cost: $251 million

Phase 2 and 3

A new 348-bed acute-care tower for intensive care, cardiac intensive care, medical, maternity and surgical patients, and expanding the emergency department. Phase 3 includes upgrades to the existing Health Care Centre and Columbia Tower to support the beds and services added in Phase 2. Design of Phase 3 is underway.

Surrey – New Surrey hospital and BC Cancer Centre

A new facility with 168 hospital beds, an emergency department with 55 treatment spaces and surgical suite with 5 operating rooms and 4 procedure rooms. The new BC Cancer Centre will have a 50-room oncology ambulatory care unit, 54 chemo treatment spaces, room for 6 linear accelerators for radiation treatment, and more.

Surrey/White Rock – Peace Arch Hospital renewal

An expanded Emergency Department, new surgical suite and updated Medical Device Reprocessing department at Peace Arch Hospital are improving access to emergency and surgical services for the communities of White Rock and South Surrey.

  • Current status: Completed in 2022
  • Total cost: $87 million

Surrey Memorial Hospital new acute tower

The new tower is expected to add acute and specialized care capacity, such as medical, surgical, pediatric, perinatal, women's-health, and mental-health and stroke care.

  • Current status: Planning. The project’s scope, budget, timelines and procurement strategy will be determined in the business-planning phase.

Cranbrook – Dr. F.W. Green Memorial Home (long-term care home) replacement

A new 148-bed long-term care home replacing the 60-bed Dr. F.W. Green Memorial Home.

Kamloops Cancer Centre

A new 5-storey cancer centre on the Royal Inland Hospital campus and upgrades to the hospital to expand cancer care.

Kamloops – Royal Inland Hospital new tower and renewal

Phase 1

A new 107-bed patient care tower including operating rooms, a mental health and substance use in-patient unit, child and adolescent mental health services, obstetrical services and neo-natal intensive care unit.

  • Current status: Completed in July 2022. 

Phase 2

Renovations and expansion of the emergency department, pediatric unit and post-anesthetics recovery unit.

  • Current status: Under construction
  • Completion: 2027
  • Anticipated total cost: $417 million for phases 1 and 2

Kelowna General Hospital new MRI machines

Installation of new 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine and replacement of existing 1.5T MRI machine, which will double the number of scans to 15,000 per year and shorten wait times for medical scans.

  • Completion: 2025
  • Anticipated total cost: $38 million

Penticton Regional Hospital oncology department upgrade

Relocation of oncology department to a larger space with more chemotherapy chairs, treatment bays, exam rooms and workspace.

  • Current status: Under construction
  • Completion: 2024
  • Anticipated total cost: $22 million

Penticton Regional Hospital new patient care tower

A new 84-bed surgical services centre, expanded the emergency department and renovated support areas to improve patient care.

  • Current status: Completed. Tower open since April 2019, renovations completed May 2022.
  • Total cost: $308 million

Trail – Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital redevelopment

A new emergency department and day surgery unit, a new ambulatory care wing, expanded pharmacy, renovated oncology department, modernized physiotherapy department and upgraded cast clinic.

  • Current status: Completed. Done in several phases between 2020 and 2023. 
  • Total cost: $58 million

Vernon Jubilee Hospital inpatient psychiatric unit

The new building will have 44 single-occupancy patient rooms, including a new four-bed psychiatric stabilization unit. The inpatient psychiatric unit will be integrated along with the community-based crisis and hospital services team.

  • Current status: Construction is expected to begin in 2026 and be open to patients in 2029.

Williams Lake – Cariboo Memorial Hospital redevelopment

An additional 25 beds for a new medical/surgical inpatient unit and a new mental health and substance use inpatient unit. It will also include expansions to ambulatory care, oncology, maternity and pharmacy units as well as a new emergency department.

  • Current status: Under construction
  • Completion: Phase 1 in 2026 and phase 2 in 2029
  • Anticipated total cost: $367 million

Campbell River – New long-term care home

A new 153 bed long-term care home including a hospice unit, convalescent care unit and a specialized population unit for people experiencing challenges related to traumatic brain injury, mental-health or substance-use issues.

  • Anticipated total cost: $134 million

Colwood – New Western Communities new long-term care home

A new 306-bed long-term care home in the Royal Bay area of Colwood. It will include a hospice, a specialized unit for younger people with brain injuries and an adult day program.

Duncan – Cowichan District Hospital replacement

A new 204-bed hospital with 7 operating rooms, 36 emergency department treatment spaces and a Level 1 Nursery so more newborns can stay locally.

Nanaimo Cancer Centre

A new cancer centre and renovation and expansion of the existing community oncology clinic at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Nanaimo Regional General Hospital redevelopment

A new 2-storey building addition plus basement level that includes a 12-bed intensive care unit (ICU) and a 12-bed high acuity unit (HAU).

  • Current status: The ICU was completed in June 2023. The HAU is under construction.

Dawson Creek and District Hospital replacement

A new 70-bed hospital with an expanded emergency department, surgical and operating, maternity and mental health space. It will continue to provide ambulatory care, chemotherapy and radiology services.

Fort St. James – Stuart Lake Hospital replacement

A new 27-bed hospital including 18 long-term care beds to replace the old facility. It will also have an emergency department, treatment rooms, trauma bay and ambulance bay as well as a primary care centre.

  • Anticipated total cost: $158 million

Prince George – University Hospital of Northern B.C. redevelopment

Phase 1 (site preparation)

Construction of a 471-space parkade next to the cancer centre parkade, as well as relocation and demolition of the Northern Interior Health Unit to support future site master plans.

Prince George Surgery Centre

Northern Health assumed operations of the centre to provide low-complexity day surgeries so the University of Northern British Columbia can prioritize capacity for more complex surgeries.

  • Current status: Completed. Open since April 2023.

Prince Rupert Regional Hospital emergency department redevelopment

A redeveloped emergency department to streamline and improve patient flow. It will include a larger triage and trauma area, a bigger patient assessment/treatment area, improved high acuity unit rooms, and better patient privacy. 

  • Current status: Under construction as of March 1, 2024
  • Completion: May 2025
  • Total cost: $16.5 million
 

Quesnel / North Cariboo – G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital redevelopment

A new emergency department and intensive care unit.

  • Current status: Completed. Open since April 2023. 
  • Total cost: $27 million

Terrace – New Mills Memorial Hospital and mental health facility 

A new 78-bed hospital with a level 3 emergency trauma and inpatient surgery centre as well as a 20-bed adult inpatient psychiatric care unit. A new 25-bed Seven Sisters regional mental health facility has been added onsite to provide long-term rehabilitation and recovery programs for adults living with serious and persistent mental illness and addiction.

  • Current status: The main hospital is under construction. Seven Sisters was completed in December 2023 and opened to patients in February 2024. 
  • Completion: Opening in late 2024 and full completion in 2026.
  • Anticipated total cost: $633 million

North Vancouver – Lions Gate Hospital new acute care facility

A new 108-bed acute care facility, expanding the perioperative suite to include 8 new operating rooms, 39 pre-operative and post-operative spaces, a medical reprocessing department and new outpatient clinic spaces.

  • Current status: Under construction
  • Completion: 2025
  • Anticipated total cost: $310 million

Richmond Hospital redevelopment

Phase 1

Renovations to the Milan Ilich Pavilion and relocation of the cancer-care clinic as well as the psychiatric emergency unit.

  • Current status: The psychiatric emergency unit is under construction. The cancer care clinic was completed in 2023.
  • Completion: 2024

Phase 2

A new 216-bed Yurkovich Family Pavilion with emergency department, pre- and post-surgical care, intensive care unit, medical imaging department, pharmacy and short-stay pediatrics.

Phase 3

Renovations of the South Tower and Milan Ilich Pavilion to create new inpatient psychiatry and psychiatric assessment unit, maternity ward, and neonatal intensive care unit.

Richmond – New long-term care home

A new 150-bed long-term and hospice care home to replace the 86-bed Richmond Lions Manor-Bridgeport. It will provide care for people with complex health needs, offer an adult day program and overnight respite for people to access support while living independently.

Vancouver – Centre for children and youth living with health complexity

A new centre for children and young people living with complex, chronic conditions who have difficulty performing routine daily and typical activities without assistance; have significant caregiving requirements; and frequently use the provincial health care and social systems.

A new research and support building next to the new St. Paul's Hospital. It will include research laboratories, physician medical offices, administration and third-party commercial spaces and a child daycare amenity.

Vancouver – Cyclotron and radiopharmacy laboratory

A new state-of-the-art cyclotron and radiopharmacy laboratory, which will increase the production of clinical radiotracers, the radioactive isotopes used in medical imaging to detect and monitor cancers.

Vancouver – Dogwood Care Home (long-term care home) replacement

A new 150-bed long-term care home to replace the previous 83-bed building.

  • Current status: Completed in Summer 2023

Vancouver General Hospital operating rooms renewal

Phase 1

 Construction of 16 new operating rooms, opening a new 40-bay perioperative care unit, clinical support and education spaces, to increase the number of surgeries performed and reduce the cancellation rate for scheduled cases.

  • Current status: Completed in May 2021
  • Total cost: $102 million

Phase 2

Renovation of the second floor of the Jim Pattison Pavilion North to upgrade and expand the surgical suites. This includes 15 new operating rooms, a 38-bay perioperative care unit and required support areas. When complete, the hospital will have 32 new operating rooms built to modern standards.

  • Anticipated total cost: $332 million

Vancouver – New St. Paul’s Hospital

A new 548-bed full service, acute-care hospital and integrated health campus. It will have several leading provincial programs and referral centres, including heart and lung care, renal, eating disorders, specialty surgeries and transplants.

A new 240-bed long-term care home to replace other beds at Providence Health Care facilities. It will include culturally safe living spaces and services for Indigenous Elders.
