Independent School Teaching Certificate Standards Committee (ISTCSC)

Under the Independent School Act, the Independent School Teaching Certificate Standards Committee (ISTCSC) is responsible for:

  • Setting standards for applicants and educators in B.C., including education, competence, and professional conduct requirements
  • Setting standards for receiving and maintaining an independent school teaching certificate (ISTC)
  • Determining which standards apply for each type of ISTC  

The Minister of Education and Child Care has appointed the following members to the committee:

  • Lesya Balsevich
  • David Loewen
  • Elizabeth Moore

 

 

Set requirements and qualifications for teachers to be certified

The ISTCSC is responsible for establishing the standards for certification – the requirements that must be met before a person can be certified as a teacher in B.C. The current standards were adopted and approved effective August 28, 2023. 

Evaluation decisions on applications for an Independent School Teaching Certificate made between November 22, 2019 and August 28, 2023 were based on the certification standards below. 

 

Review the standards for educators

The ISTCSC is responsible for establishing and revising the Professional Standards for Independent School Teaching Certificate Holders based on feedback from certificate holders, independent school communities, independent school sector partners, and the public.
