The nominees for the 2023 Award of Excellence for Design and Contract Preparation – Structures are:

Project: Taylor Bridge Gusset Plate Repair
Location: Peace River between Fort St. John and Dawson Creek, B.C.

The Taylor Bridge connects the North and South Peace regions and is the only structure capable of accommodating extraordinary loads across the Peace River. Facing a structural challenge, Hatch Ltd., Charter Project Delivery Inc., and T.Y. Lin International Canada Ltd., acting as the owner’s engineering team on the Taylor Bridge Project, provided exemplary service.

While conducting engineering investigations for the future of the Taylor Bridge Project using computer models and inspections of thousands of structural elements, the team detected an understrength gusset plate on a main load path of the bridge. The layout of the structural members connecting to this gusset plate required the team to design a unique and innovative repair to solve the issue in as short a time frame as possible. Throughout the process, the team communicated effectively and provided full-time onsite presence.

Project: Highway 8 Flood Response 2021 - Bridge Repairs and Temporary Bridges
Location: Highway 8 between Merritt and Spences Bridge

When the atmospheric river event of November 2021 severely damaged Highway 8 between Merritt and Spences Bridge, Stantec Consulting Ltd. joined a multidisciplinary team of consultants working with the ministry and its contractors to design repairs to existing permanent bridges, two temporary bridges and provide procurement support and field support during construction. Beginning work immediately after the flood event, the team reconnected the route to be used safely by the public and to serve as construction access for the permanent rebuild of the highway.

Stantec Consulting Ltd. provided exemplary service and innovative and creative engineering and technical solutions to assess the damage, plan, design and oversee repairs, and enable work crews to move to the other damaged sites.
