The nominees for the 2023 Award of Excellence for Alternate Transportation are:
Project: RapidBus Launch for routes R1 through R5
Location: Greater Vancouver Area
R.F. Binnie & Associates Ltd. provided project management for this route expansion, as part of ongoing RapidBus expansion work.
Working with the ministry, eight municipalities, one health authority and four contractors, they oversaw a complex and fast-paced project that included road widening, intersection improvements and new multi-user pathways, bus stops and bus priority infrastructure. Bus service became faster and more frequent and convenient, with real-time departure data on Bus ID poles.
The five routes now have the combined capacity to move 12,000 customers per hour during rush hour, with more expansions underway and planned.
Project: Kootenay Lake Ferry Terminals Improvements
Location: Kootenay Lake, approximately 81 km north of Creston B.C.
This project revitalized two ferry terminals on Kootenay Lake, making them safer and more accessible for all ferry users.
At the Kootenay Bay terminal, the existing washroom facility is now more accessible, and there are new electric vehicle charging stations for EV drivers, along with better lighting and parking improvements.
At the Balfour terminal, improvements include a new washroom facility and a significant increase to the terminal’s vehicle queue capacity. Upgrades were also made to Highway 31/3A to improve safety and traffic flow within the community. Sidewalks and lighting also improve connections between the terminal, a new transit stop and the highway.
