There are 3 types of security screening in the B.C. Public Service.
Every position must have a security screening designation which describes whether security screening is required, and the type, based on a position’s responsibilities. For any job posting, external or internal, transfers or other position changes, the security screening requirement(s) applicable to the position must be clear.
This check is required for all designated positions in the B.C. public service. It's unique to the public service and described in HR Policy 14 – Security screening.
It's a search for charges and convictions.

This check is required for applicants or employees who work with vulnerable adults or children under 19. It isn't unique to the public service. It applies to everyone in British Columbia working with youth and children or vulnerable adults.
If an organization has positions that require these checks, it has a unique access code and secure link to provide applicants to submit their CRRA check online. This unique access code should not be shared publicly.

Enhanced Security Screening (ESS) is a higher level of security screening. It includes additional checks, like:
ESS checks must be directly related to the duties of the position. They are used for positions that require a higher level of integrity for positions involving compliance, enforcement and court services.
A business case must be developed for all current and planned positions with Enhanced Security Screening. Learn more about business cases on the B.C. Public Service security screening designation page. Enhanced security screening cannot be done without an approved business case.
