Go Electric Hydrogen Fuelling Infrastructure

Last updated on December 1, 2022

British Columbia is a leading developer and test bed for fuel cell products for transportation. The Province of B.C. will continue to help develop a leading hydrogen economy by:

  • Investing in education, research and key demonstration projects; and
  • Implementing hydrogen fuelling station.

Fuel cell vehicle manufacturers have targeted B.C. as a key market for the rollout of fuel cell vehicles. B.C. is a world-leader in the development of fuel cell technology for transportation, with major automakers and the fuel cell industry investing heavily in research and development in the province.

The CleanBC Go Electric Hydrogen Fuelling Infrastructure Program is working to expand the hydrogen fuelling network in B.C., further reducing one of the key barriers to market adoption of hydrogen vehicles: fuelling infrastructure. At the end of 2021, there were four hydrogen fuelling stations operating in the province with two more set to be open in 2022.

By leveraging industry, including automaker investments in fuelling infrastructure, funding is being provided towards the construction or upgrade of hydrogen fuelling stations in the province.

The Go Electric Hydrogen Fuelling Infrastructure Program is managed by the Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association.

To support the Go Electric Hydrogen Fuelling Infrastructure Program and reduce the barriers associated with installing hydrogen fuelling stations, the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation funded the development of a Hydrogen Station Permitting Guidebook for B.C. This Guidebook is intended as a comprehensive resource to support the development and permitting of hydrogen refuelling station projects.
