Rationale

Current opportunities for raccoon in the Omineca are limited to trappers Oct 1 – March 31. Providing hunting opportunities for raccoons could discourage and prevent the establishment of possible invasive population. Region 5 (region-wide) and 6 (on Haida Gwaii) both implemented ‘no closed season, no bag limit’ seasons during last regulation cycle due to increased observations. Recently, there have been rare/occasional sightings of raccoons in the Prince George area; it is presumed that this is not a natural range expansion and they are errantly transported by vehicles/trains. There is concern that established expanding populations could have adverse effects on the local ecosystem.
