Motor Vehicle Prohibition Regulation [157/2022]; schedule 7, section 16

Northern Rockies

16 (1) Effective year round, in those portions of M.U.s 7-19, 7-21, 7-22, 7-23, 7-30 and 7-31 shown in red on the attached Map No. 7-16/21, except that, at all times, snowmobiles are permitted in the 20-metre wide corridor highlighted in green on that map.

(2) During the period January 15 to September 30 inclusive, in those portions of M.U. 7-22 shown in orange on the attached Map No. 7-16/21.

Proposed regulation

Add a designated trail for snowmobile access to Iver Lake located in a year round snowmobile closure under section 16(1) of the Motor Vehicle Prohibition Regulation.

Rationale

The Caribou Recovery Program developed and implemented high elevation area snowmobile closures to support caribou recovery efforts in the Northern Rockies in 2022. The access trail into Iver Lake was missed when the original closures and designated corridors were proposed. This regulation proposal intends to provide snowmobile access into Iver Lake to maintain current and historical angler opportunity on a stocked lake. Iver Lake has an elevation of 1,370m and the snowmobile closure begins at 1,400m; the two access trails into the lake cross over the 1,400m elevation closure on either side requiring a designated corridor for lawful winter access.
