BC Corrections mail policy

Last updated on May 29, 2024

BC Corrections encourages family and friends to send mail as a way to maintain contact with individuals in custody.

There are some rules related to mail to ensure our correctional centres remain safe and secure:

  • Only letters and appropriate photographs are accepted
  • Do not send personal or homemade items
  • Do not use wax crayon, glitter pens, gel pens or lipstick
  • Do not mail any personal or homemade items
  • Do not spray mail with any scents
  • Do not decorate with glitter or stickers, or by gluing items to mail

All mail that enters our correctional centres is subject to search. Mail that does not meet security guidelines may be returned.

The handling and processing of mail entering a correctional centre is authorized by the Correction Act and the Correction Act Regulation.

To find the mailing address of an individual in custody, see our correctional centre directory.
