Jury duty

A jury is a group of people who have been selected to observe a trial in a court of law. A jury may be called for either a criminal or civil trial, or a Coroner's inquest.

Citizens of B.C. play a crucial role in the justice system by participating as jurors. Jurors bring their own knowledge, insight, and unbiased opinions to ensure an impartial and fair trial.

Jurors do not need to know anything about the law to serve on a jury. The judge will explain the law and any legal terms necessary to help jurors fairly consider the matter before the court.

The BC Sheriff Service (BCSS) is responsible for managing juries in British Columbia. Sheriffs coordinate the summoning of jurors, juror selection and see to the needs of jurors for the duration of the trial.
