Forest Stewardship

B.C. is a world leader in sustainable forest management with leading-edge environmental practices. 94% of British Columbia is designated as Crown land. This allows the province to sustainably manage forest resources.

BC Timber Sales

BC Timber Sales (BCTS) manages 20 per cent of the province’s allowable annual cut for Crown/public timber and generates economic prosperity for British Columbians through the safe, sustainable development and auction of public timber. BCTS operates in 33 communities and directly supports over 8,000 jobs across B.C.

Taking action in B.C.'s forest sector

Sustainability through collaboration

Forests continue to contribute to our quality of life and the opportunities we share. That's why Government and people across the province are taking action to improve planning, preparation, response and recovery in the face of wildfires, drought and other pressures impacting forest health and supply of timber.

Supporting innovation

The Province promotes innovation in the forest sector. Today wood fibre is converted into electricity, fuels, plastics, solvents and lubricants

Forest Tenures

Approximately 95% of the province's timber is publicly owned. The B.C. government authorizes the rights to harvest Crown timber through forest tenures.

Private timber marks are required to transport logs from privately-owned land and are administered by the B.C. government.

Supports for Forestry Workers, Communities and Businesses

The Province is providing coordinated and comprehensive supports for workers, communities and First Nations and businesses to offset any economic impacts that may follow from new restrictions on harvesting old growth forests and other changes in the forest sector.

Permits, Forms and Applications

Whether you want to harvest timber from Crown land or simply cut down a Christmas tree, there are certain forms and applications you’ll have to fill out to obtain a permit.
