About the BC Plumbing Code

The BC Plumbing Code is largely based on the National Plumbing Code of Canada and generally includes some changes specific to B.C.

The BC Plumbing Code provides technical requirements for the design, installation, alteration and repair of plumbing systems. It includes:

  • Rules for water usage
  • Specific qualification requirements for people performing plumbing work

BC Plumbing Code 2024

The BC Plumbing Code 2024 includes over 50 updates from the 2020 National Plumbing Code. These updates aim to improve safety, health, water efficiency and protection from water and sewage issues. They also provide more choices in designs and materials.

Unique to B.C. changes

Dual-flush toilet water use

  • The rules for plumbing work qualifications and clarity on dual-flush toilets (6.0 L and 4.1 L) meeting water use stay the same.

Non-potable water systems

  • B.C. no longer needs to offer special permissions for non-potable water systems. The updates to the 2020 National Plumbing Code replace them, allowing non-potable water systems for toilets, urinals and trap seal primers.
